50% off all green tags, which is most tags. They have an incredible amount of useless stuff, but there are a few gems. My friend found an amazing green army jacket and an old Pinkerton security jacket in great condition both for under $20. So if you are in the area, pop in. The sale won’t last long.

Kris’ Hollywood glam apartment is what my ideal space would look like if I didn’t have a problem hoarding and collecting things. White high gloss walls, a white floor and ceiling, a baby grand piano, what more could the minimalist glamour girl in me want…oh yeah, a mirror lined closet. The space is lust-worthy and I just wonder how one lives there without being so worried something would spill. No Pig-Pens allowed. But even though I can’t stop drooling over the amount of white, reflections, mod furniture and pops of purple, the one thing that it absolutely fascinating is the lounge room covered in orange corduroy upholstery, orange blankets, rugs and even orange mood lighting. I have always had a slight hatred for the color orange. In small amounts it was tolerable, but too much was offensive. This room has made me rethink everything. Not only is it cozy, but it just shows that too much of one color if done properly isn’t wrong. For those of us with one room apartments, this is a lot harder as a) we are most likely renting and b) picking a monotone palate would make our entire home that color. After a while that could be overbearing. But for those lucky ones with rooms and space, don’t be afraid to get creative with a color that inspires you. Do you have an office? Do you love green? Or blue? Paint all of the walls one tone, use a similar color tile or carpet. Then add a white desk for a blue room or a wooden desk for a green room. Add as many similar color accessories and go from there. Or do you have a TV room and do you love grey? Or black and white? You know where I am going from here. Do not be afraid of a monochromatic palate. It works in fashion so why wouldn’t it work in decor. Just add different textures to things so that they pop. Velvets, leathers, silks, there are so many great options to celebrate the color that you love. Even a small bathroom can be fun to oversaturate. Just be sure to keep the rest of your space light on the color. You will probably need a break at some point from staring at just the one dramatic shade.

NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA

IMG_4490IMG_4492

“Dress in style and go hog-wild, me-oh my-oh.
Son of a gun we’ll have big fun on the bayou.”

Hank Williams said it right when he wrote Jambalaya on the Bayou. There is nothing like New Orleans period, and nothing like their Mardi Gras celebration. With one of my best friends heading down for the holiday, I figured why not tag along and see the best of what New Orleans had to offer. I had four days free and an itch in my pants to go somewhere, so I hopped on an early Sunday flight arriving sans sleep thanks to a late night at the job that pays for these escapades. Sunday and Monday were my planned shopping and exploring days. Tuesday would be Mardi Gras festivities filled with parades, Bourbon Street and innocent fun. Wednesday would be recovery and more exploration. Though I had no car, I felt like my elephant feet got the job done. One 48 pound checked suitcase and four days later, I was ready to get back to reality. Don’t even ask me how I managed to get everything back without so much as a tear. I thank the TSA for being gentle with my almost overweight bags, not my genius packing skills. New Orleans is a blast. There is much I didn’t get to see, but here is the best of what I did get the chance to explore. The city is filled with friendly characters (post to come), oversized portions, trouble should you so desire, and enough history, architecture and art to fill a few weeks or maybe just another trip. Jazz Fest anyone?

VINTAGE CLOTHES AND THRIFT SHOPS

The Revival Outpost

With two locations, each shop is filled with amazing vintage clothing and accessories. Some are extremely cheap and some are randomly expensive. Hunt the racks, but check for holes, snags and stains. From each store I walked out with two large bags and a nice dent in my bank account. Both shops are definitely worth popping into and if you can, take the time to look through everything. There are hidden gems here. I can guarantee it.

No Fleas Market Resale Shop

This is your typical thrift shop. Things are beyond cheap. There is a lot of stuff and if you search the packed racks, you will find something good. Great for dresses, jackets, scarves and old books.

Miss Claudia’s Vintage Clothing and Costumes

What a shop. Half cheesy costumes people spend ridiculous money on for Mardi Gras and half vintage clothes to be used as costumes for Mardi Gras. Their prices are pretty ridiculous, but there are a couple pieces in the store that are incredibly underpriced. I found two and snapped them up. A gorgeous Spanish 1940s wedding dress for $40 in perfect condition, and a fun tuxedo vest. Watch out for the usual holes and stains that vintage clothes are plagued with.

BASIC ANTIQUES AND JUNK SHOPS

The Bargain Center

Let’s talk about junk. This shop wins the prize of the best in the town. To my greatest vexation, I didn’t get the chance to go in as it was closed due to Mardi Gras, Lundi Gras and Ash Wednesday. Though I did get a chance to peek in the windows. With everything from glass knick knacks to furniture, I would almost assuredly say that anything you can imagine is buried somewhere in this giant space. A friend furnished his house with a pair of unique throne-like wicker chairs for $200. Stuff is dirt cheap, but be prepared to dig and get your hands dirty. Just from the window, it looks like there is a layer of dust covering everything. Next trip…

Magazine Antique Mall

Wow. I spent a good 2 hours dragging my friend from booth to booth to booth, sending her to grab the shop attendant to open locked cabinets and find buried treasure. Thank you to my very patient and generous friend, Kris. This “mall” is filled with booths of all crazy cool antiques, vintage clothes and other interesting stuff. I left with 2 more bags in one hand and a globe in the other. I found two presents for my mother, and some other quirky pieces that I just couldn’t take my eyes off. Prices range as the booths are all different vendors. If you see something and it seems overpriced, keep looking. I guarantee you will find another booth with the same item for a lot cheaper.

Collectible Antiques

A little dustier than the antique mall and a little more crammed for about the same price. It takes some searching, moving and definitely looking over what you find, but you will not leave empty handed. There are still pieces in this store I wish I would have bought. A fun place to explore, especially after a glass of wine around the corner at The Italian Barrel. Robert DeNiro ate there the night were happened to be at the bar.

HIGHER END ANTIQUES

Out of the Closet

IMG_4366

With a name that sounds like a clothing shop, I was a little confused when I walked in to find an antique shop. This space is nicely curated and manageable. My friend found an amazing aluminum / tin 9′ tall replica of an electric tower, and I found this amazing frame that surrounded an antique window with mirrors instead of glass. It was a brilliant piece of antique art and I would love to steal this idea for my own home. Everything does unfortunately come with a price their’s were well out of my budget. But if you have some cash to drop, stick this shop on the top of your list.

Antiques De Provence, llc

If I had the money and the space, I would buy every piece in this never ending store. They import everything from Provence. Giant green wine jars, ten foot tall mirrors, urns that could fit two of me inside, and so so much more. As we left the shop and kept walking down Royal St, we passed 4 different other showrooms of the same place. All carefully decorated with one of a kind antiques. If anything just pop in for ideas and inspiration.

C’est très cher. Incredible pieces that look to be of museum quality. Furniture, lighting, art, and such. Another shop worth a walk though if you are passing by, just to take a peek.

Ikea has always been the best place for furniture staples. They have functional closet units, sofas, storage, etc, etc, etc. Everyone has been to an Ikea compound, everyone has tasted the Swedish meatballs, and everyone has spent hours following the stick figure man pointing how to assemble a piece. So imagine my surprise when Ikea contacted me about my old apartment asking me for images and descriptions about my use of their things. They had seen shots of my space when Apartment Therapy had published my submission years earlier. At that point in my life, I was on a budget and new to NYC, naive to all the gems on CraigsList and at flea markets. All I could afford was Ikea furniture. There was an Ikea chandelier, closet unit, cabinet, shelves, and so much more. For a look at my old  space click here. Apparently Ikea loved my “Old Soul Apartment” and decided they wanted to use it for their new online magazine. What an honor for me! I submitted what they needed, and after a couple months I received an email that the new site was up and running. Curious to see what it was about I decided to check it out and I found a plethora of inspiration, beautiful homes and awesome new products that I have to share it with you. My space is not yet featured, but the ones that have been are so intoxicating. It also shows that Ikea has branched out more and instead of just having clean lines and stoic shapes, is embracing vintage and ornate design. Since they have been collaborating with designers, their products are having less of a disposable feel and instead resembling heirloom pieces from ABC Carpet and Home. Their magazine also has a section on real people mixing Ikea with antiques: giant green glass bottles, branches, vintage wine boxes and old fruit baskets. This site will be bookmarked so I can see at what Ikea is up to month after month. Check out the magazine for yourself here.
